FABRIC QUESTIONS

How do I order your fabrics to carry in my retail or e-tail store?

Thank you so much for your interest in carrying Josephine’s fabrics! To carry Josephine’s fabrics in your retail or e-tail store, please contact customer service at Robert Kaufman Fabrics to place an order or to set-up a wholesale account. Visit Robert Kaufman Fabrics website for more information.

Where can I find your fabrics?

Josephine’s fabrics are carried by a variety of brick & mortar retail stores and online e-tailers. We have included a list of some e-tailers who carry Josephine’s fabrics under our Contact & Find page.

If you are a retailer/e-tailer who carries Josephine’s fabrics, please let us know by emailing us at find@josephinekimberling.com with your store name and web address so we can add you to our website and help direct people to you! And thank you so much for carrying Josephine’s fabrics!

To find Josephine’s fabrics in a retail store near you, head over to the Robert Kaufman website, and use the search tool on their Where to Buy page. Please note that the list of stores that pop up will not necessarily carry Josephine’s fabric lines, so always call first to double check!

I am looking for a particular fabric, and am unable to find it online or in stores in my area, can I order fabric through you, can you get the fabric I need for me, or can you tell me where I can find it?

Unfortunately, no. Josephine does not sell her own fabrics, nor does she have access to getting fabric for you. She also does not have visibility as to which stores are carrying her fabrics. We update our e-tailer list whenever we are aware of a new e-tailer carrying Josephine’s fabrics. Please be sure to check back often, as the fabric you are looking for may soon be available online. And thank you so much for your interest in Josephine’s fabrics!

Can I use photos from Josephine’s website or Flickr account to display on my website or in my retail/e-tail store when promoting her fabrics?

Please contact us at photographyinquiry@josephinekimberling.com for permission to use Josephine’s photos and for any photo needs you may have.

Can I use your fabrics to make my own products to sell?

Yes, definitely! Thank you for your interest in using Josephine’s fabrics on your products! Josephine has created Flickr groups for her fabric collections and invites you to upload any projects you create using her fabrics, to inspire and be inspired by the creative community!

Can I use your free sewing patterns to make items and sell them?

No. Josephine’s sewing patterns are for personal use only, and even though they are free for you to download, they are still property of Josephine Kimberling and are not able to be reproduced for resale. Thank you for asking!

I am a manufacturer interested in using your fabrics for my products. Are your fabrics available for me to use in this way?

Thank you for your interest & inquiry! Please contact Robert Kaufman Fabrics , and direct all inquiries to them. Most likely, this option will be available to you.

QUESTIONS BY ARTISTS

I am interested in having my own fabric line. What advice can you give me on how to get started?

It’s important to note that everyone has a different story on how they got started, and there are many different ways to go about it. From my experience, I would recommend researching the fabric & quilting market and compile a list of fabric companies. Then go to their websites to see what type of artwork they typically carry. If you find that your style is a good fit and still offers them something different, then keep them on your list. Go to their website’s contact page and e-mail or call them to find out what their artwork submission guidelines are and when they review collections.

Begin working on a portfolio of artwork and send it in to them. Be patient. If they come back to you and turn you down, submit your work to the next company on your list. You can always ask them for feedback, and if there is another company they think your work would be a good fit for. Be patient, persistent, and willing to learn and grow from situations and opportunities! It can only help you become a better artist.

I would like to learn how to create repeating patterns. What advice do you have and what resources are available for me to learn?

Creating patterns that repeat is something you will need to practice with in order to become proficient at it. I do recommend the book “Digital Textile Design: Portfolio Skills”, as it shows you how to take your artwork and work step by step within Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator to learn the tools that will help you create different types of repeats.

You have mentioned that you use Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop. What are good resources for learning these programs in depth?

I absolutely LOVE www.lynda.com, which is an online training library that allows you to learn at your own pace. You do need to subscribe to use the services, and what is great is that they have an option that allows you to pay $25 for each month you would like the services for. So, for example, you can sign-up for February and then later for September, and each month is only $25!

The training is taught by Adobe certified instructors, who visually show you tools and talk though them. Video’s are broken up into small increments (1min-15min for example), so you can really learn whenever you have a spare moment. There are also training files available so you can practice what you learned.

There are also some great magazines out there that you can pick up at your nearest bookstore: Advanced Photoshop, Computer Arts, Layers Magazine, Photoshop Creative, Digital Arts, etc. These magazines are good for users who already know the programs but who want to learn new tips and tricks, or learn how to do a specific effect. Most of them offer step by step tutorials along with a CD of images for you to follow along and learn with.
