Resort 2015: Thom Browne

Thom Browne Resort 2015 collection wrapped up by Josephine Kimberling

I finished up my Resort 2015 runway research a few weeks ago and am so inspired by a few of the designers, that I thought I'd share them with you over the next few posts! Perfect for a little eye candy this Friday morning.

First up is Thom Browne. I adore the muchness of it all - the painted backdrops for the collection. The subdued neutrals that support a palette of brights. The mix of plaid with embroidered florals atop. The added texture of ribbon embroidery and applique on stockings. The superb mix and match of painted florals in multiple scales against a simple ticking stripe....

And let's not forget a cape of green grass with budding blooms! No. Let's not forget that. Swoon.

Happy Friday to you! Hope you enjoy this deliciousness!

Pinterest Finds

I quite love Pinterest. I mean, who doesn't? I thought I'd start sharing with you some of my favorite finds as I feel inspired, just to share the love! I do have a rule about Pinterest, and that is, to focus on Pinning at night, after work hours...otherwise, I can get sucked-in big time and then chunks of my day have disappeared! Does this happen to you?

So to kick off my Pinterest finds for this week of things that sparked my interest, let's start with...

DARK & MOODY These dark walls make me seriously swoon! That dark floral wallpaper in the powder room just kills me! Would you be adventurous enough to try something bold in your powder room?

Josephine Kimberling's will be in Surtex 2014 booth #540!
Josephine Kimberling's will be in Surtex 2014 booth #540!

Well, it's that time of year again! Surtex is 9 days away and I am ready and excited to meet up with current Licensees, potential new ones, friends & artists.

It's such an amazing trade show, full of possibilities and creativity!

If you are a licensee or manufacturer, I'll be in corner booth #540 and I invite you to stop by.

You can also either schedule a meeting with my agent MHS Licensing or swing by their booth just down the isle from me at #522.

Visit my booth to meet me and be engulfed in my artistic style and visit MHS to talk business, for licensing inquiries and potential opportunities.

Both MHS and myself will also be exhibiting at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas in June. (More on that later!)

Here's a sneak peek at some of the new art I'll be unveiling at the show!

I'm excited to see you there!

For those of you not familiar with Surtex, it's where artists, designers, studios, agents and licensing firms sell and license art and design for a multitude of product end-uses: decorative fabrics, linens and domestics, contract textiles, wall coverings, floor coverings, apparel textiles, stationery, greeting cards, gift wrap and other paper products, tabletop, giftware, toys, ceramics, packaging and publishing.

It takes place in New York City at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and runs Sunday, May 18th - Tuesday, May 20th.

I finally got my UPPERCASE magazine, Issue 21 in the mail and it's SO goooood!! Especially because this issue focuses on Surface Pattern Design – so it's chocked full of great designers and their work as well as information about the industry, how to work with and create great work, etc.

In this issue is the "Surface Pattern Design Guide" which features 100 pattern designers and their work, including mine. Yay! It's so fun to see and have my work be among that of others in this field. (Recognize my patterns from my Field Day fabric collection?)

I heart UPPERCASE magazine - it's thick, matte pages that are not only well designed but also tell such inspiring stories of creatives. This magazine focuses on creativity in so many forms that it is really great for being inspired in different ways each time I read it.

In this issue of UPPERCASE you'll also find an interview from the amazing cover artist Molly Hatch who "views plates as one would view a painting". I just LOVE her work so much!

Inspiration: Feeling BLUE

Blue from Country Homes & Interiors Magazine
Blue from Country Homes & Interiors Magazine

For the past many months, I've been feeling blue - the color, that is! I admit, I'm usually not a lover of a primary-like color...I gravitate more towards an aqua than a cobalt, but this Indigo blue is feeling very fresh! Especially when mixed with other shades and values within it's range.

Add New

I spotted it on the Roberto Cavalli Resort 2014 runway, and have been in love since! After that, it started popping up in magazines, companies were making products using this color - and also incorporating the huge trend of tiles, either from Turkey or Islam. Prior to it shifting into this trend, the inspiration was delft blue from Chinese or Dutch ceramics. If you haven't spotted them yet, keep your eye out and I guarantee that you'll start seeing this huge trend all around you. I think it's still got a lot of life to it and we'll see it into next year for sure.

Ok, so happiness in Atlanta at AmericasMart was definitely seeing my artwork on products and meeting with Licensee's. However, work aside, I was seriously INSPIRED when I decided to stop down and see what all the frenzy was about in Building 3, in the 'Cash and Carry' jewelry section. I've heard women speak of this section - tons of jewelry, really cheap, that you can purchase on the spot and take it home with you right then and there. How could I NOT stop by, yes?

So, as I was wandering around in this area, I passed the most unique booth of clock parts made into jewelry...and then I had to turn right back around and look at EVERYTHING! The company is called Rewind Jewelry (clever) and Carlos was working his booth and designing gorgeously unique pieces at the same time. It was really fun and inspiring to watch. I think I was there for an hour or more looking at everything...and having some pieces designed while giving women a thumbs up when they would try something on that was striking. Ok, yes, I was hooked and completely wanted to help support this amazingly creative small business!

Here's what Rewind Jewelry is about (copied from their website):

We started creating this type of art because we’re lovers of all things industrial. We create what we have passion for & we’re fascinated by the history, artistry and the importance of vintage timepieces & objects.

We’re big believers in showing people what they might be missing in this world. By placing an object into a context where people see it as more important, we turn normal things into works of art. We love the stories, the beauty and the craftsmanship of these historic pieces and thrive on the challenge it poses to recreate & rework them into something that others can appreciate as much as we do.

The people who inspire us most in this world are those who take a chance on something because they love what they’re doing.

Here is just one of the many trays of gorgeous goodies that Carlos was working with to create new, exquisite pieces of jewelry.

I am so drawn to the unique, so when I saw these I knew I had to take some home with me. Here are 2 pieces that will be sure to be worn with some fabulous outfits. What was really great was that Carlos changed out a chain here, replaced a charm there and totally customized the piece to my whimsy. It was fun to have some downtime after a long day walking the show!

What's extra cool is that Carlos was able to tell me the year my pieces were made as well as other details. It's pretty exciting to know that I own a few pieces of up-cycled jewelry. I wonder who owned them before?

Aren't these pieces of jewelry fabulous?!? Can you see why I was so struck by them? If you'd like to keep up with what Carlos is making at Rewind Jewelry, follow their Facebook page for some serious eye candy! And if you just have to have one of these pieces too, be sure to reach out to them to get your own amazing up-cycled historical piece! (and support a small business at the same time = win-win!)
